Village life in abundance
Sub-Saharan Africa is going through a dramatic demographic transformation. By 2050 the continent will have a population of 2 billion people with about 1 billion living in rural areas. In excess of 800 million workers will enter the workforce for the first time between 2015 and 2050 leading to the working population peaking relative to the total population during this period. This transformation will create massive opportunity for economic growth if the investments in infrastructure and skills are sufficient to enable productivity.
At the moment 600 million people in Sub Saharan Africa lack electricity and at current planned investment levels, this number will remain unchanged by 2040 due to population growth and under-investment. Lack of electricity is not the only difficulty. Access to safe drinking water remains a major challenge with 1/3 of people relying mostly or completely on surface water.
EV’s mission is to respond to this reality by “building value for villages through lasting utilities and profitable enterprises that radiate light and life.”
